This panoramic photograph from 1926 shows the contestants in the “First International Pageant of Pulchritude & Seventh Annual Bathing Girl Review”, held in Galveston, Texas. This was the first international beauty pageant, one that would later be called the Miss Universe Pageant. I consider myself to be reasonably literate, but I must admit that the [...]

The Fort Worth Zoo opened the James R. Record Aquarium in 1954. This was the same year that “Pete the Python” came up missing, sending Fort Worth residents into a panic. The glass bottom boats were also a popular attraction at Aquarena Springs, the crystal clear water affording a marvelous view the plant and animal life to be found just below the surface. I posted one of these photos earlier, but I found others taken at the same time yesterday and thought I’d post the whole collection together. They show my dad and I riding rented go-karts at a track in Fort Worth, Texas, most likely the one that was on University Dr. near the zoo. I suspect [...]

How about that swell ’55 Oldsmobile 2-door hardtop? This is the Tex-Ann, a motel with a very retro name and an awesome neon sign. And the best part is that it’s still in business today, looking much like it does on this mid-1960s postcard. I may have to make my way to Palestine, Texas and [...]
