This vintage lithograph clearly advertises some sort of burlesque production, but the exact subject isn’t clear. In fact, I find that the meaning of turn of the century theatrical posters was seldom clear, often prompting more questions than they answer.

Burlington Pin Boys

This photograph, taken in 1916, shows two of the pin boys that worked at the Bowling Academy in Burlington, Vermont. (Yes, those are bowling pins that the boys are holding) The pins were far from standardized in those days, some looking like these, others resembling today’s pins, and still others looking like shorter, fatter variations.

The Subway Bowling Alleys, 65 South St., Brooklyn, New York. This photograph, taken by Lewis Wickes Hine in 1910, was was one of many that illustrated the unfortunate conditions under which children worked. These kids, called “pin boys”, usually worked late every night.
