Founded in 1895, the Knights of Ak-Sar-Ben was an organization whose initial purpose was to keep the city of Omaha as the host of the Nebraska State Fair. The Knights diversified their goals over time, becoming an important civic/philanthropic organization. Ak-Sar-Ben Field was built to generate revenue to fund their charitable contributions, with the thoroughbred [...]

Hotel Secor

Thumbnail image for Hotel Secor

Here’s a postcard view of the Hotel Secor in Toledo, Ohio, postmarked in 1908. This card isn’t particularly appealing from an aesthetic point of view, but is distinctive for having advertising on the address side. I’ve also seen this same image on a hand-tinted version.

This card from the Georgia Motor Court in Augusta was never mailed, but has an interesting correspondence written on the back nonetheless. It’s very difficult to read, so I’ve included a scan of the back in the event that someone can decipher the words that I could not. Here’s what I get out of it: [...]

Conley’s Motel

April 24, 2010
Thumbnail image for Conley’s Motel

You know how some postcards show a motel to be a clean, modern, idyllic place for rest, relaxation and fun? This isn’t one of those. No, unfortunately the Conley’s Motel (one mile west of Irwin Interchange of Pennsylvania Turnpike) looks abandoned. Now I know it was a much nicer place than this. Could they not [...]

Argosy Motor Inn

April 24, 2010
Thumbnail image for Argosy Motor Inn

This postcard was made by Harry H. Baumann, a producer of linen cards in the ’40s. It seems sort of odd to me that this unmailed postcard would have been rubber-stamped on the front, “Shell Land Novelty Co.”, right over the deck surrounding the swimming pool! Perhaps this card served as a sample of some [...]

Thumbnail image for James R. Record Aquarium

The Fort Worth Zoo opened the James R. Record Aquarium in 1954. This was the same year that “Pete the Python” came up missing, sending Fort Worth residents into a panic. The 18-foot python was finally found, spotted behind the tropical bird cage amongst some leaves. Months later Pete would give birth to fifty eggs, [...]

King’s Highway

Thumbnail image for King’s Highway

I’m just amazed at the flawless condition of this postcard. I’m pretty enthused about acquiring this card, and I don’t even consider myself a collector! (I told a dealer that I wasn’t a collector the other day. They laughed.) There’s no indication of the publisher on this King’s Highway card, but I’ve seen another, the [...]
