The Overman Wheel Co.

Thumbnail image for The Overman Wheel Co.

This wonderfully art-nouveau lithograph advertises the Overman Wheel Company, a bicycle manufacturer based out of Hartford, Connecticut. The Overman Wheel Company was an important manufacturer during the turn of the century bicycle craze, and was the maker of Victor Bicycles. Founded by Albert H. Overman in the early 1880′s, the bikes were produced until the [...]

Lady Motorcyclist

Thumbnail image for Lady Motorcyclist

From the earliest years of the 20th century comes what was then a rare sight indeed: a woman piloting a motorcycle. I was once pretty savvy about early bikes, and could have told you the make of this one, but I’m not sure now… perhaps an early Pope?

The Donaldson Lithographing Co.

Thumbnail image for The Donaldson Lithographing Co.

It only makes sense that a lithographic company would advertise via the medium of lithography, and that’s exactly what we have here. I find it interesting that they’re focusing on a specific, and relatively narrow, market with this poster, and I wonder what other subjects were targeted in this manner.

The Robbins Family in Color

Thumbnail image for The Robbins Family in Color

We’re starting to wind down our look at the Robbins Family of Southwest Harbor, Maine, as we’ve gotten to the later color photos. These photographs include Eva Robbins, who to my thinking is the heart of the album, and we also see the marvelous white home that appears in several photos taken thirty-plus years before.

The High Rollers Extravaganza Co.

Thumbnail image for The High Rollers Extravaganza Co.

This vintage lithograph clearly advertises some sort of burlesque production, but the exact subject isn’t clear. In fact, I find that the meaning of turn of the century theatrical posters was seldom clear, often prompting more questions than they answer.

Fremont Hotel and Casino

Thumbnail image for Fremont Hotel and Casino

Oh boy, we’re back in Las Vegas! Judging from the cars, I’d guess the photograph for this postcard to have been taken around 1954. Those familiar with ‘Vegas today will be amused by the description on the back of the card: FREMONT HOTEL AND CASINO DOWNTOWN LAS VEGAS, NEVADA Nevada’s tallest and finest hotel which [...]

A couple of weeks ago my wife and I spent the afternoon at her parents home, with much of that time spent browsing through a fabulous archive of family photographs. There were hundreds of great old photos, and I’ll be sharing them on Atomic Antiques from now and then. This photo shows my father-in-law, Mike [...]

I don’t know if a ’64 Ford Galaxie would be the hot setup for trekking out to the old Keefer place or not, but it’s sure going to look swell tooling down the boulevard!
