Topaz the Beautiful

Topaz, the Beautiful, Custodian of the Guest BookI came across this unusual postcard at the Montgomery Street Antique Mall this past week, and was curious to see if a little digging could uncover it’s significance. As it turns out, the studio-gallery in question was that of Roger L. Deering (1904-1980), a renowned seascape and landscape painter from Maine. The card says precious little about the artist or his gallery, the focus pointed instead on his beloved cat, Topaz. The card, copyright 1962, has a description on the back that reads:
“A Maine native, Topaz resides in the seacoast town of Kennebunkport, wintering at Pinehurst, N. C.  When not traveling, this gracious personality enjoys charming the gallery visitors.”
